About Julie Harris

Welcome to Kokoro Nutrition

Kokoro Nutrition was created in 2018 by Julie Harris, a Registered Dietitian, Certified Personal Trainer, and an everyday athlete recovered from an eating disorder.

The word kokoro is derived from the Japanese language. It means connecting mind, body, heart, and spirit. The meaning behind this word truly connected with me. As I’ve learned the hard way that when one element is not well, you can’t perform at your best.

At Kokoro Nutrition I’ll show you how to create a life in balance. You’ll find I focus on science with practical advice.

I talk about the Everyday Athlete as someone who regularly enjoys purposeful physical activity. They have some degree of knowledge about their body and nutrition. Everyday athletes spend time planning daily activities, exercise, nutrition, and goals so they can live a life in balance. You probably know which areas you want to focus more on and which areas need more balance.

My philosophy on health is living a life that is sustainable and allows you to thrive.

Kokoro Nutrition

I started struggling with my body image when I was 12 years old. I developed anorexia and struggled with my eating disorder for nearly 15 years. I kept it a secret from nearly every one I loved until a few years when I realized in order to fully recover from the eating disorder, I needed to stop letting it control me.

I am passionate about living your life in balance because of my experiences and the knowledge I have gained a long the way. Kokoro Nutrition is my way of sharing a personal journey to find balance in my life through fitness, food, travel, yoga, and family. My goal with this site is to use my stories and posts to help you live a life in balance.

A few personal facts about me…

In 2007, I earned my degree in exercise science. A little over a year before graduating I started writing about health for a LiveStrong.com and other websites.

For 10 years, I worked in corporate wellness, which inspired me to go back to school and complete a degree in nutrition sciences, which I did in 2017. For the first half of 2018, I spent 1200 hours completing a dietetic internship so I could take the Registered Dietitian exam.

I have traveled to 49 states. Last state… is Maine. I’ve lived in eight states (Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Massachusetts, and now in Maryland).

I started running track when I was in the 6th grade. I have run one marathon, numerous half marathons, several 10ks and 5ks. My favorite type of running is trail running.
